Old Mill Road – 1st Draft – 10%

Old Mill Road - Work in ProgressThings are moving along nicely for Old Mill Road. It took me a minute to get back into the story, but now my soul is saturated with it again. When I first started on the novel back in January I came up with 85,000 words as my target word count. The current draft of Shady Palms is just over 86K, so I figured that would be a good goal to set for myself. One editing and rewriting starts, I have no idea what length the final tale will reach.

I think most writers have different methods for coming up with their story lengths. I just look at the average length for a particular story length in the format and genre I write in and aim for the middle.

With all of that mumbo jumbo muttered out of the way, I’m pleased to announce I just crossed the 8500 word mark. So based on my initial goal, the first draft is about 10% done. I’ve only been averaging 2000 words a week since I started on the project. If I wasn’t so busy doing other things at the moment, I’m sure the story would be further along. My day job has been hectic lately and overtime has been bountiful, so I’ve been working a little harder and longer than I care to. I’m taking a trip to Portland, OR at the end of this month, and after that, I hope to clear more time for writing.

All of the numbers are very interesting to me at this point because while I’m about 10% done with the 1st draft, I’m about 21% through the old screenplay the story is based on. There’s been a lot of dialogue so far and introduction of things. Now that the major players are represented in the story I can start adding more flesh to their bones.

I’ve also been making a number of changes to the story since I wrote the screenplay. Some characters have changed names, the best of all I’ve put a lot more thought behind the main antagonist in the story. If all goes to plan, he’ll be a serial killer to rival the likes of the most notorious history. I started talking about my story ideas with my wife, and she just cringed.

“Why would you have him do that?” she asked.

“Because it’s evil,” I replied.

Just how evil? I guess we’ll all have to wait and see until I release those demons on the page. I’m sure once this project gets farther along that I’ll post some excerpts online to satisfy my fans.

Now it’s back to the grind. I’ve got some more killing to do.
